2 lb fresh Ambrosia apples
1 (12.25-oz) jar caramel sundae topping
1 teaspoon apple pie spice (or ground cinnamon)
1/4 teaspoon kosher salt


  1. Grate apples on box grater (about 5 cups). Place apples, caramel, apple pie spice, and salt in slow cooker.
  2. Cook on HIGH for 2–2 1/2 hours (or LOW for 4–4 1/2 hours), until apple mixture is thick. Serve warm (or chilled 1 hour).
Tip: To make apple butter, remove lid and cook 1 1/2 more hours, or until apples are browned and mixture is very smooth.

Other Preparation Methods

  • Dessert: Whisk 8 oz softened cream cheese, 1/2 cup caramel dip or sauce, and 3 cups thawed whipped topping until blended. Combine 3 cups diced apples, 2/3 cup chopped salted-caramel pretzels, and pecan praline; fold into cream cheese mixture.
  • Appetizer: Core and slice 2 apples into 1/4-inch discs. Combine Publix Deli Chunky Chicken Salad with 1 teaspoon curry powder and 1/2 cup each dried cranberries and chopped pecans. Place 2 tablespoons on top of each apple disc.
