Minted Whiskey-Grapefruit Smash

1/3 cup warm Simple Syrup (recipe below)
2 tablespoons fresh mint leaves
2 cups pink grapefruit juice, divided
3/4 cup whiskey
4 drops aromatic bitters
1 cup sparkling wine, chilled
4 grapefruit segments


  1. Combine warm Simple Syrup and mint leaves in small bowl. Let stand 30 minutes or until cool. Remove and discard mint leaves.
  2. Fill four highball glasses with ice. Combine mint syrup, grapefruit juice, whiskey, and bitters, then divide among glasses.
  3. Top each glass with sparkling wine. Garnish with grapefruit segments.
Simple Syrup
Combine 1 cup water and 1 cup granulated sugar in small saucepan. Bring to a boil, stirring to dissolve sugar. Remove pan from heat (for use in above recipe); otherwise, cool to room temperature. For later use, cover and chill at least 2 hours or up to 2 weeks.
