Minted Whiskey-Grapefruit Smash

1/3 cup mint simple syrup (recipe below)
2 cups pink grapefruit juice
3/4 cup whiskey
4 dashes bitters
1 cup sparkling wine, chilled
4 grapefruit segments (optional for garnish)


  1. Fill cocktail shaker with ice; add mint syrup, grapefruit juice, whiskey, and bitters.
  2. Shake well and strain into 4 ice filled highball glasses; top each glass with sparkling wine.
  3. Garnish with grapefruit segments, if desired.
Mint simple syrup
Combine 1 cup water and 1 cup granulated sugar in small saucepan. Bring to a boil, stirring to dissolve sugar; remove pan from heat. Combine warm simple syrup and 2 tablespoons fresh mint leaves in small bowl. Let stand 30 minutes or until cool. Remove and discard mint leaves. Cover and chill at least 2 hours or up to 2 weeks.
